Green Gals: Chilliwack Mothers of Invention

Rachel Murrell and Yanika Tytherleigh knew they were onto something good.
After years of making laundry soap, baby wipes and house-hold cleaning products for personal consumption, they decided to take their eco-friendly endeavor public. The two Chilliwack mothers became Green Gals, a niche business offering the Fraser Valley an opportunity to purchase environmentally sound, sustainable products that they created and tested through years of careful experimentation. Murrell and Tytherleigh were able to give their new customer-base innumerable variations in scent, product content, a plethora of size options, as well as the ability to refill containers a customer may already have on hand. Add in mind-blowingly good pricing and the option of having your product dropped off at your home or business, and you have the recipe for success. Green Gals took off, and the duo are currently working on increasing their range of product offerings and methods of retailing.
I was fortunate enough to be one of the first Green Gals customers to buy their artisan laundry soap. I purchased 9 L of an Ivory soap based solution, mildly scented with lavender essential oil. Delivered to my door, it was packaged in a re-usable tub that I had opted to purchase for an additional fee, and had instructions for use and reordering listed on the lid. When I got it to my laundry room, I pried it open & smelled it. Fresh and clean!
I then ran a full load of multi-colored clothes. When they were finished drying, I decided to rate how the Green Gals product worked on the load.
Sniff test: Faint scent of lavender after drying, but very mild. Good for people with babies/ sensitive skin who like a very light smell, but not cloying or chemical.
Softness test: I had not used any fabric softener, and because Green Gals don’t use extra dyes or additives, the clothes came out much softer than I expected. You definitely do not need commercial softeners/anti-static product with this detergent.
Stain test: I had thrown a teal colored tank top in with the wash, knowing that it had several hideous oil-based food stains on the bust. It did not come out using the Cheer detergent I had just used up, and I had no expectation for the Green Gals product. When I noted that the tank top was stain-free after using Green Gals soap, I was over the moon.
The Green Gals product defied my expectations, but it was the pricing and the customer service that really set it apart. I have since moved on to my second 9L of detergent, and have decided to take a walk on the wild side by opting to try a lavender-eucalyptus scent. It’s delightful, but I am looking forward to ordering my next batch, and providing them with my own custom scent option: satsuma and cloves. YUM!
